A recent college graduate with a Bachelor's Degree in accounting or equivalent will probably begin by looking for an entry level tax accountant position. There are several different types of tax accounting jobs that someone fresh out of college could take. Depending upon the interests of the graduate, these may include Staff Accountant with a Big Four accounting firm, or a Tax Associate job in the tax division of a large corporation. Everyone needs to start somewhere, and this is the first step for a career in tax accounting. In this article we'll take a look at some of the job opportunities, how much the starting pay is, what type of qualifications are required, what their duties would be, as well as some of the promotion opportunities available.

Obviously being fresh out of college it can be difficult to decide which area of tax accounting someone would like to get a job in. There are a few different routes that someone can go that includes small private firms, large public firms, government jobs, and getting hired on by a corporation or small business.

The pay ranges for these various jobs are going to vary quite a bit depending on a few factors. Some of these factors include the prestige of the firm and how competitive the job position is. Usually the higher both of these factors are the higher the starting salary will be. In some cases someone right out of college can get a job paying over $60,000 per year. The majority of people that get jobs in this field will find that they will get paid anywhere from $36,000 per year all the way up to just over $50,000 per year. This puts the average right around $42,000 per year.

Depending on where someone applies for a job, the types of qualifications required will vary. Some jobs will require a bachelor’s degree in accounting, while other jobs may require a master’s degree as well as being qualified to sit for the CPA examination. Government jobs typically do not require anything more than a bachelor's degree, but most accounting firms will look for candidates that have already received the necessary education to get certified.

Some of the different areas that someone could get hired in include preparing taxes, advising clients on tax law, and even auditing taxes. The area someone chooses to go into will depend largely on personal preference as well as job availability.

In order to advance someone's career in this industry it will require a lot of hard work. The people that make the big bucks are the ones that own the firms, are partners, or have reached a manager or director position within a firm. Entry level tax accountant jobs are going to be the bottom of the line, but people can move up fairly quickly if they produce good quality work and are hard-working.

It should now be very clear what entry level tax accountant jobs are all about. They can provide a very good salary and there is room for advancement. Probably one of the best parts about this type of career is the job security that is available in this industry – as the saying goes, death and taxes are the only two certainties in life!
